Michael Jackson was left embarrassed yesterday after he proudly accepted a non-existent award for "Artist of the Millennium" in front of millions of TV viewers.

Confusion arose when Britney Spears called the singer on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York to present him with a cake to celebrate his 44th birthday.

She added that, for her, Jackson was the artist of the millennium.

But Jackson took her words to mean he was being honoured as the greatest singer of the past 1,000 years.
